The high-temperature furnace must first have its power determined, while also taking into account its electrical heating efficiency and power factor. There are two methods for determining the power. One is the heat balance method. According to the law of conservation of energy, the total heat consumed by a resistance high-temperature furnace is equal to the total heat emitted by the electric heating elements. The total heat consumed includes the effective heat used to heat the metal, as well as all the heat losses from the furnace. This total heat is converted into total power, and after considering the electrical heating efficiency, it is then multiplied by a power reserve coefficient. This coefficient takes into account factors such as the potential increase in furnace productivity and possible increases in heat loss. For continuously operating high-temperature furnaces, the power reserve coefficient is [value or range typically used, if known; for intermittently operated high-temperature furnaces, it is [value or range typically used, if known.

The other method is the empirical method, which mainly determines the furnace power based on the volume of the furnace chamber.

Before calculating the electric heating elements, the material of the heating elements and their connection method should be selected based on the determined power and the supply line voltage.
